A modern car is faster, safer, more economical and more comfortable than almost any classic. Yet when an old Mini, a 1960s Alfa or a Beetle passes by, we turn our heads and smile. Why does this happen? What do these cars have that new ones do not?

Because they speak to all the senses
You do not drive a classic car with your eyes alone. You hear the engine fire up, smell the petrol, oil and old leather, feel the road through the steering wheel and the seat. There are no screens, no speakers imitating engine noise, no electronics making decisions for you. There is only the car and the driver. That raw, direct relationship is for many the greatest pleasure.
Because they carry memories
Almost all of us have a car we connect with our childhood. Our father’s or grandfather’s car, the one we took on holiday to the village, the first one we drove with borrowed keys. When we see the same car today, we do not just see metal and chrome. We see people, places and summers that will not come back.
Because we understand them
A modern car is a computer on wheels. To find a fault you need a diagnostic machine. A classic, on the other hand, you can understand. With a few tools, a good manual and patience, you can tune a carburettor, change the points or fix the brakes. There is great satisfaction in knowing how something works, and being able to look after it with your own hands.

Because they are beautiful
Before wind tunnels, pedestrian-protection rules and strict fuel-economy demands, designers had much more freedom. That is why classic cars have such distinctive personalities. A Jaguar E-Type, a Citroën DS, a Lamborghini Miura could never be mistaken for anything else. Many of them are displayed in art museums today, and not by chance.
Because they bring us together
The classic car world is full of people who share the same passion. Clubs, events, historic rallies, car-park debates about the right colour or the right part. A classic car is the easiest way to start a conversation with a stranger. And often, the stranger becomes a friend.

Because they are history in motion
Every classic car is a piece of history: of technology, of design, of the society of its time. When you drive it, you do not see it behind museum glass. You live it. And when you look after it, you hand it on to the next generation.
Perhaps in the end we love classic cars for the same reason we love an old watch, a vinyl record or a handmade piece of furniture. Because they have soul. And in a world that moves faster and faster, they remind us to enjoy the journey, not just the destination.
