This summer was unique, not only because of the calm days I spent on the beautiful island of Paros, but also because of the unique experience of driving a VW Golf GT Mk2. From 10 July to 5 September, my stay on the island was a mix of relaxation, nostalgia and unforgettable moments that I will always remember.
Paros: The Ideal Backdrop for an Unforgettable Summer
Paros, with its picturesque villages (Marmara, Marpissa, Lefkes, Piso Livadi and so on), its crystal-clear beaches and its warm, welcoming atmosphere, was the ideal setting for a summer holiday. My time on the island was full of meaningful moments, such as the building of my holiday home — a long-awaited project that is finally taking shape. Building this house has been as demanding as it has been rewarding, reminding me of the future memories that will be made inside it.
Between the jobs, I had the pleasure of reconnecting with old friends and relatives, many of whom I hadn’t seen for years. Their visits brought a sense of closeness and comfort, reminding me of the strong bonds that have stood the test of time. I was especially happy with the visit of my relatives from Cyprus, whose presence added an extra dose of joy to my summer.
Of course, no summer on Paros would be complete without enjoying the local food. From fresh seafood to traditional Greek dishes, every meal was a celebration of rich flavours and the island’s local produce. And of course there were the beaches — crystal-clear water, soft sand and a calm that relaxed the soul. Every swim was a cool escape, a moment simply to enjoy the beauty of the island.
The VW Golf GT Mk2: A Journey Back in Time
Among all these experiences, one part of the summer was especially special — the time I spent driving a classic VW Golf GT Mk2. The car was generously lent to me by my friend Panagiotis Trezos, who trusted me with his first car, a vehicle of great sentimental value to him. Despite its age, the car was in good condition — aged, of course, but ready to cope with everyday needs — which shows the care and attention Panagiotis has given it all these years.
From the moment I took the wheel, I felt as if I had been transported to another era. The VW Golf GT Mk2 is more than just a car; it is a piece of automotive history, a symbol of a bygone era that I have always admired. The car’s retro style, with its clean lines, simple but functional design and the characteristic sound of its engine, touched me deeply. It was like driving through time, experiencing a period that has always fascinated me.
One of the best things about driving the Golf GT Mk2 was the night drives on the quiet roads of Paros. As the island quietened down, I would take the car out for a drive, with the engine singing like a well-rehearsed symphony. The feeling of driving under the starry sky, with the cool night air coming through the open windows, was magical. It was during these drives that I felt most connected to the island, the car and the moment.
A Summer Etched in Memory
This summer on Paros was truly special for me, not only because of the progress on my holiday home or the quality time with my loved ones, but also because of the unique experience of driving the VW Golf GT Mk2. This car, with its retro charm and timeless appeal, added an extra dose of nostalgia to my summer, making it an experience I will never forget.
As I look back on those days, I feel full of gratitude for the memories made and the experiences shared. Paros, with its calm beauty and friendly atmosphere, was the perfect setting for a summer full of meaningful moments and happy experiences. And the VW Golf GT Mk2, with its vintage charm, was the ideal companion for a journey that will stay with me for years.
